Who is Ras?

2001 was the cornerstone year for Nigerian born emcee slash producer Ras, born Teddy Kiala, as he gravitated into the music industry, with the only craft he comprehends best, Hip Hop. Envisaging himself with a mic in hand and many ‘heads’ bobbing to his music, he started himself off, armed with just a basic pc, microphone and a couple of music programs. Much to his surprise, destiny had much greater plans for him.
It didn’t take long for this Pretoria based lyricist to put together a self produced 18 track demo, The Alfa, with track after track revealing endurance, hard work, and a flawless quality that has resonated and remains to date. Through this project he was able to meet and link with fellow emcees Blaklez and Stas. Collectively they decided to form a group, called ‘Pressure Point’. The three became a formidable force, arguably gaining monopoly in the hip hop scenes of Pretoria, with word play and insatiable stage presence.
Fast track to 2005, Ras together with his “dream team” Pressure Point kept momentum, increasing their industry acumen, and furthering their geographical presence with an untarnished skill. But with all things, there comes a time when a break out from a collective has to happen, for personal growth, and with this amicable break away from Pressure Point, he continued to fastidiously push on. It was at this point that he caught attention of a major label exec that wasted no time signing this talented individual up. The short lived relationship was soon after severed due to the record label experiencing financial difficulties pushing it to shut its doors, leaving Ras back to the self hustle, but certainly not distraught as he continued to work even harder.
Fast track again to 2008 where Ras can profess to putting out 3 mix tapes distributed on the streets for free. He also shot 3 music videos of outstanding quality, shot with a minimum budget - one at a majestic location of Mozambique’s white sand beaches, and 2 in his adopted home town Pretoria. These videos have made it on internationally renowned music shows; MTV base, Channel O and SABC 1’s Music Lounge. He’s also had the opportunity to be a studio guest on Hip Hop television shows Shiz Niz and Channel O’s Head Rush, and boasts two appearances on SA’s 1st Hip hop magazine: Hype Magazine, for both Editorial feature and Hype’s compilation CD. His collaborations have stretched as far as Mozambique with melodic songstress, Gabriela and Congo based emcee, Bagas, and he still continues to seek artists from all stretches of life to work with him on different projects.
His foresight sees no boundaries, and his music is true testimony to that, which assures excellent reception on both national and international level.
From beat making, to crowd pulling performances, Ras has managed to reinvent himself whilst keeping a level head and staying true to his art form. This Real African Seed has been sown into the Hip Hop industry...

New beginnings

2009 has been the year earmarked by Tshwane based, Nigerian born hip hop emcee and producer to break into bigger markets, as he puts the final touches to his self-produced debut album which he plans to release within the year.

Ras, who has been in the music industry for over eight years, believes he’s gained enough acumen and hype to catapult his bigger music career which shows an evidently promising future. This former Creative Kingdom Artist and former Pressure Point group member has put heart and soul into this upcoming project which he describes as, “a reflection and emotive journey of my personal experiences”- Ras.

From this album, expect a flawless delivery as he switches flows to serve you with well articulated, punchy rhymes with each track. This album is much nearer and dearer to him, as most production was done by Ras, himself.

Backed by a new management team, Ras will be visiting African countries such as, Nigeria, Mozambique, Angola and Botswana this year, as part of his African Tour, to promote this forthcoming album. Also in the pipeline are promising brand sponsorships deals that will truly help put him on the global map and ofcourse, he still continues to provide the masses with the much appreciated mixtapes he drops at yearly intervals.
